We, the coalition, want answers to the structural condition of the castle. We believe it should be landmarked as long as it is mainly structurally sound. No one wants to see this building fall to the same fate as the New Brighton Village Hall. The fire department has visited the Castle, and so far it seems- unofficially in good condition. We demand an official report. This building is more than just bricks, it is part of our community's history and was a positive community fixture for many years. Th neo-medevial style of the building is unique on Staten Island and there are many memories associated with the building. Landmarking is not a cure all, but it would preserve the building and integrate it with any redevelopment plans for the sit. Landmarking requires additional oversight in a redevelopment plan and more community input than an 'as of right' DEVELOPMENT. |
